Matt Carpenter agrees to extension with Cardinals

A member of the Cardinals core is now locked up for the next several years.

Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch confirmed early Saturday morning that the St. Louis Cardinals had agreed to a six-year contract extension with Matt Carpenter. Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that it is a $52 million deal that will keep Carpender in St. Louis through his age-33 season. There is also an option for a seventh year, which can either be exercised by the team at $18.5 million or bought out at $2 million.

Last season, Carpenter slashed .318/.392/.481 for the Cardinals as their second baseman. This season, with the trade of David Freese to the Angels, Carpenter looks to be St. Louis’ everyday third baseman.
