In news that a lot of people may have seen coming, Kansas freshman center has been officially ruled out of the 2014 Big 12 Tournament coming up later this week as he continues to deal with his lingering back issues. A statement was released Monday night by head coach Bill Self.
“It is possible that he could play in the later rounds of the NCAA Tournament,” Self said, noting that it is a “longshot” that Embiid will be ready to suit up the first weekend.
A few weeks ago, Embiid re-aggravated the back injury and has seen either limited to no time since. Kansas was still able to win the Big 12 regular season title without him, however as was displayed this past weekend with the upset to West Virginia, they need Embiid’s presence down low if they want to win the national championship.
Depending on who they draw in the first two rounds, the Jayhawks could make it through two wins without him on the floor, but will most certainly need him going forward after that.
But if they want tow in the Big 12 Tournament, they’ll have to do it without him.
