Could this be the last NBA Draft with the famed lotto system in place?
It’s possible as commissioner Adam Silver says the league plans to look into possible lotto changes.
Citing possible tanking as the reasoning behind it, Silver doesn’t mention that any changes will take place nor does he give any insight as to what type of format would be used if there were changes, just that they will look into it.
“There may be an issue with the way the lottery is structured. I mean, by definition, the fact that we have the lottery means that we were concerned about [tanking.] You do not want to have an improper incentive to lose games.
“The lottery was designed so that teams would not see any advantage to having a bad record because they wouldn’t be assured a certain pick.
“So maybe we need to take a fresh look at the lottery. And we are….Once the season’s over, we have a competition committee, and we’ll take a look at it.”
Thankfully for the Philadelphia 76ers (and a few other teams), it won’t happen until after the upcoming lottery/draft so they’re safe from any immediate changes.
