The San Francisco 49ers opted not to use their franchise tag on Donte Whitner and it appears the hard hitting safety might be moving on.
One such team with reported interest are the Cleveland Browns, who according to Mary Kay Cabot are ‘very serious’ about signing.
The Browns would obviously like to keep T.J. Ward moving forward, but he may price himself out of the Browns range and Whitner would come at a much cheaper cost.
Of course, Whitner, ball-hawk that he is, often found himself routinely burned in coverage for the 49ers last season and struggled on deep balls.
More importantly, the reported interest in Whitner may suggest the Browns aren’t willing to pay the hefty price that not only Ward would command, but fellow free agent safety Jairus Byrd.
Whitner’s certainly not the best available safety on the open market, but price against talent, he may be the best bet rather than backing up the Brinks truck.
