The Arizona Cardinals just lost Rashard Mendenhall, who at 26, retired from professional football on Sunday afternoon.

That’s likely contributing as to why the Cardinals will keep Ryan Williams on their roster – at least for now.

Williams has struggled with injury which has eaten into his playmaking ability. Add in his cap number and there was belief that he may get the axe. But now with an extra running back spot open on the roster, he’ll reportedly remain with the team and will be given the opportunity to compete for touches moving forward.

"The plan right now is to give Ryan Williams an opportunity to be part of the RB rotation, his cap number 1.5M, including 50K workout bonus."

Of course, that’s right now. Lots can happen between free agency and the start of the season, especially for a player like Williams who seemingly can’t stay out of the trainers room.

While we’d love to see Williams finally become healthy and realize his once solid potential, it seems to be asking a lot at this point.
