Stanford hires former Texas Longhorns assistant Duane Akina

Welcome back to the Pac-12, Duane Akina.

As multiple outlets have reported, Stanford hired former Texas Longhorns assistant Duane Akina over the weekend to be the Cardinal’s new secondary coach.

Akina confirmed the hiring in a text message to ESPN:

“I really appreciated Coach Shaw and the Stanford staff. Excited to join a university so rich in tradition academically and athletically, much like the one I just left. Looking forward to being part of a great staff and continue to grow in this profession.”

Akina spent 13 years with the Longhorns, helping the school develop the reputation of being “DBU” (for the record, that’s “Defensive Back University” and not “Dallas Baptist University”). Before arriving in Austin, Akina was an assistant coach to Dick Tomey at the University of Arizona, where the Wildcats established their vaunted “Desert Swarm” defense under his tutelage.
