Three reasons to watch UFC 171

This weekend kicks off the dawn off a new Welterweight era as Johny Hendricks and Robbie Lawler fight for the vacant UFC Welterweight championship. In the co-main event, Carlos Condit looks to cement his status as the #1 Welterweight contender against the streaking Tyron Woodley.

This card is absolutely stacked with exciting fights and story lines. Today, I give you three reasons to watch UFC 171.

1. History in the making: For the first time in nearly eight years, the undisputed Welterweight title will be on the line without Georges St-Pierre fighting for the belt. St-Pierre vacated his title and took a leave of absence from the sport after his November bout with Johny Hendricks at UFC 167. To make it even more exciting, long time MMA veteran Robbie Lawler, who made his UFC debut in 2002 and has spanned more than 5 major MMA promotions, will be fighting for the title.

2. The Welterweight tournament: While the UFC is not promoting this angle for UFC 171, the main and co-main event are basically a Welterweight tournament. Dana White has confirmed that Carlos Condit will get the winner of Hendricks/Lawler if he is able to defeat Tyron Woodley in the co-main event. While White would not confirm Woodley would get the same treatment if he won, you have to expect that with an impressive finish he will be the next in line. If that is not exciting enough, potential Welterweight title challengers, Hector Lombard and Jake Shields are on the main card as well.

3. Exciting fighters: The card is absolutely stacked with some of the UFC’s most exciting fighters and prospects. Besides for the incredible four fighters in the main/co-main event, the UFC has thrown Kelvin Gastelum , Diego Sanchez, Dennis Bermudez, Justin Scoggins, and Hector Lombard into the mix as well. It is a stellar card overall, and not one to be missed.
