Toby Gerhart is not likely to return to the Minnesota Vikings in 2014. It will be a different world for the running back, who has spent his career to date backing up and spelling the great Adrian Peterson.
A return to the Vikings was considered unlikely from the start. With free agency under way, three teams are reportedly interested in adding the Stanford product to their backfield. From Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports:
Three teams showing interest in RB Toby Gerhart, per source. They are the Niners, Jaguars and Browns.

There is a starting gig wide open in Cleveland and potentially a similar opportunity in Jacksonville if that is a priority for Gerhart. The backfield in San Francisco is much more crowded, especially with Marcus Lattimore set to return next season.
If Gerhart’s goal is to play for a winning team, however, the contrast is pretty stark between the 49ers and the other two teams.
