NBA Rumors: Lakers to fire Mike D'Antoni at season end?

Is Mike D’Antoni in the midst of coaching his final games as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers?

According to Stephen A. Smith of ESPN, that’s what he’s been told.

The resident loudmouth on the Worldwide Leader expressed that a source informed him that the Lakers will fire D’Antoni at season end.

I had a source tell me last night [that] Mike D’Antoni is gone at the end of the season. He won’t be there [...] I’m just telling you, that’s the word coming out of L.A. It’s not coming from the Lakers themselves, but people close to the organization say that Mike D’Antoni is gone because there’s no way that [Carmelo Anthony] would elect to go there if D’Antoni is there. If D’Antoni is gone, with the cap room they have coming up and Kobe’s imminent return, [L.A.] is a viable option [for Anthony].

While the Lakers have been nothing short of horrific this season, that’s not all on the shoulders of D’Antoni who at times has had to field a roster full of players scraped away from the NBA’s D-League.

In addition, Kobe Bryant has a very close relationship with D’Antoni so the report should be taken with a heavy grain of salt.
