Sometimes a basketball game gets interesting for something that has little to do with actual basketball. Alfred Hitchcock coined the term ‘MacGuffin’ to describe plot devices in his stories. As the rule goes, a MacGuffin is something that you think is a major part of the story but is just something used to get us to the next part of the story.
In this case Deron Williams playing basketball against the Miami Heat on Wednesday night is the MacGuffin, as it serves as merely a fact that gets us to the punchline of one particular play of the night. At one point, Williams chased a ball and instead of recovering in bounds, he ran into the ESPN camera guy courtside.
Hey, at least Hitchock can be proud of the interesting bit of cinematography it provided.
