The Atlanta Braves are seemingly preparing to be without pitcher Kris Medlen for the foreseeable future – this after signing free agent starter Ervin Santana. Now it appears Medlen himself is doing the same, recently telling Dave O’Brien that he’s preparing himself for Tommy John surgery.
#Braves Medlen said he knows what’s coming, nothing official yet but he has accepted that he’s almost certainly going to need TJ surgery
Sadly, it won’t be a new experience for Medlen who has already missed an entire season (2011) after having the same operation.
If there’s any silver lining, many believe that pitchers can come back even stronger after their second Tommy John surgery and by no stretch is it a death sentence to a career.
The most recent pitcher to undergo the operation a second time and return with success is Brian Wilson of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Wilson had the surgery in college and then had it again as a member of the San Francisco Giants before signing with the Dodgers last season.
There’s still no official word yet on Medlen’s potential surgery, but it looms more and more likely.
