After meeting with him for a majority of the afternoon, the Detroit Lions have decided to sign free agent wide receiver Golden Tate and take him off the market. In an offseason where receivers haven’t been flying off the shelves, Tate has become the first major receiver to sign a deal somewhere and seems to have set the market in a way.

According to Lions beat writer Tim Twentyman, the Lions have given the former Seahawks wide out a five-year contract that will see him paired alongside Calvin Johnson for the foreseeable future.

Getting Johnson a lanky No. 2 deep threat compliment was a huge need for the Lions and they fulfilled that by signing Tate to a fat contract. The next move seems to be extending Ndamukong Suh, but the first order of business appears to be done and Calvin Johnson has finally found a running mate in the Lions offense.
