NFL Free Agent Rumors: Browns want Rex Grossman if they can't sign Matt Schaub

I’m guessing that Matt Schaub wasn’t atop the wish list of most Cleveland Browns fans when free agency broke, but he may look like a goldmine in comparison to the alternatives.

After releasing both Jason Campbell and Brandon Weeden today, the Browns are in need of a veteran arm and have their sights set on Matt Schaub of the Houston Texans.

Schaub (who’s also heavily desired by the Oakland Raiders) is still under contract with Houston though and has yet to be released. So if the Browns can’t nab their desired veteran signal caller, they may be forced to move to their backup planRex Grossman.

Yes, that sound you heard was the collective Browns fan base vomiting.

Browns cutting QBs today opens up a spot for Matt Schaub. If they don’t get him, then Rex Grossman is the next man up

I’m not even sure where to go with that Browns fans – I’ll just apologize in advance if you’re subjected to watch such this season.

Nobody from the Browns has confirmed any of these rumors.
Schaub or Grossman as the browns saviors? Yeah, right. Just more rumors. Like the one last season which had the Browns trading Gordon. Nobody knows what the Browns plans are. It’s all speculation. We will all find out when something actually happens.

Check out the whiteboard behind GM Farmer at his presser. Clearly you can read that they have an interest in Grossman:

Grossman is 33 yrs old and not exactly a top tier starting quarterback.
A back up at best. Same with Schaub. I never believe rumors. I will
sit back and wait till they make a move for any player.
Browns don’t have a great track record at making player decisions. Hope things
        change this year.

I totally agree, Gary but I think they want either Schaub or Grossman to be a veteran presence to mentor whichever youngster they take in the draft. Mind you, I don’t think they will take a QB with the 4th pick. I don’t think they believe that any of those top 3 quarterbacks are worth a 4. I know I don’t.

I agree. I think they are leaning towards Watkins with first pick. Which would be fine with me.
But, I still don’t think Schaub or Grossman are the answers at quarterback behind Hoyer. With our track record at picking quarterbacks, they need to tread very slowly.
They both throw too many interceptions and Grossmans best years are behind him. There are better quarterbacks out there.

I saw today that Dallas is interested in Weeden. I literally laughed out loud. The comments below the article were the best though. The Dallas fans were whipped up. They want no part of Weeden. He’s not even signed yet and he’s staring down the Cowboys receivers.

I was hoping the interest in Grossman was from Shanahan and he would get over it!! If they go get him, he is NO better than Campbell!! What a waste!! The free agency signings so far are only replacements for what they let escape in Jackson and T.J. and really have made no inroads into the holes we had before free agency started !! It’s cost us more money than keeping what we had and we got older!!!
