Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets defensive back Jamal Golden was granted a medical hardship waiver by the NCAA on Thursday.
Head coach Paul Johnson issued a brief statement about the good news:
“While we anticipated that Jamal would receive the waiver, I am happy for him. I know it was difficult for him to watch from the sidelines last season, but he has worked hard to get healthy and he is eager to get started again this spring.”
Golden put together an excellent 2012 season for the Yellow Jackets, earning All-ACC honors as a return specialist. He was the only player in the country that year to rank in the top 10 nationally in both kick return average and punt return average. He also returned two kicks for touchdowns, becoming the first Yellow Jacket to return a kickoff for a touchdown since 1998. However, his 2013 campaign ended prematurely, as he suffered a shoulder injury in the third game of the year and sat out the remainder of the season.
Golden will have two years of eligibility remaining.
