Francena McCorory named USATF Athlete of the Week

Thanks to a pair of great performances at the IAAF World Indoor Track & Field Championships in Sopot last weekend, Francena McCorory was named the USA Track & Field (USATF) Athlete of the Week on Thursday.

In what was her first individual win at an international championship meet, McCorory captured the women’s 400 meters in Sopot with a time of 51.12 seconds, edging out second-place finisher Kaliese Spencer by 0.42 seconds. She then helped the US women’s 4×400 meter relay team win the gold medal, running her leg in 50.36 seconds. The US team fell less than two seconds short of setting a world record in the event.

In accepting her award, McCorory said her 4×400 teammates deserve just as much credit:

“There were some incredible performances at Worlds. I’m so honored to have been chosen for Athlete of the Week. There is nothing like representing your country.

“I have to share (Athlete of the Week) with the other ladies on the 4×4. Without them, this weekend wouldn’t have been nearly as special.”
