There has been speculation about the future home(s) for the ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament, and it appears some of the smoke may be clearing.
Sports Illustrated is reporting that a person with knowledge of the deal has said the ACC tourney will be played in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center in 2017 and 2018.
With the additions of Syracuse, Boston College, Pittsburgh (and Louisville next season) to the conference, this comes as not even a small surprise.
The fun part of the whole situation will be that the ACC tourney will now be in direct competition–both in terms of location and dates–with the Big East Tournament, held in Madison Square Garden.
Oh, and did we mention that the above-mentioned teams used to reside in the gutted Big East? As did current ACC members Notre Dame, Miami and Virginia Tech.
The more things change, the more they stay the same, huh?
Currently the de facto home of the ACC Tournament is in Greensboro N.C., having been played there 26 times including this season, more than any other venue. But with a much more prevalent northern flavor to the conference, the league needed to find a way to get the New York and other northeastern fans to feel less excluded come tournament time.
Maybe ESPN’s Requiem for the Big East film can be renamed…possibly to Resurrection of the Big East.
SI’s report has been confirmed by the New York Times.
