Just last month Universal announced that they would be working on a follow up to the hit comedy Ride Along. Somehow I knew it would not be too long until we got some more information about the film. Universal Pictures announced earlier today that Ride Along 2 would be released on January 15, 2016.
Honestly, if you consider the success seen by the first film, which stars the comedy stylings of Kevin Hart and Ice Cube, there is no surprise that Universal has decided to capitalize on that and move forward with a second installation.
In the first film, Hart plays the role of Ben Barber, slick, fast-talking security guard named Ben Barber who is in a romantic relationship with Angela Payton, who is played in the film by The Game actress Tika Sumpter. When Barber decides that he wants to take his relationship with Angela to the next level, her brother James steps in to make sure that Barber is up to the task of taking care of his sister.
The film had a pretty decent opening weekend, earning $41.5 million. Ride Along went on to hold the top spot at the Box Office for three weeks in a row before being dethroned by The LEGO Movie, which opened to $69 million.
Director Tim Story, who is also working with Hart on the film Think Like A Man Too, will be returning to direct the second installment. Screenwriters Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, who worked on the script for Ride Along are currently working to pen the script for the next installment as well.
At this point, there is still no word on the plot for the film or any further casting decisions; however, a release date is definitely a step in the right direction. One would assume that as the production starts to kick into high gear, we will find more and more information on the film.
Ride Along 2 is scheduled to be released on January 25, 2016.
