Wisconsin Badgers thrower Michael Lihrman capped off his excellent indoor track and field season with an NCAA title on Friday night, winning the weight throw with a heave of 76 feet, 3 1/2 inches.

Lihrman, who holds both the NCAA record and the Big Ten Championships record in the event, said afterwards that he got himself angry before his final two throws:

“Everything was very, very close. We threw for about an hour and a half and I was getting tired. Those last two throws, I was trying to get myself angry. On that last throw, I was shocked myself.

“You want to throw as far as possible on the last one and usually what happens is you pull on it or do something wrong, but I ended up throwing just fine and I was pretty happy with it.”

Nick Miller, a junior from Oklahoma State, was the runner-up to Lihrman. Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, a sophomore from Purdue, finished in third.
