Japan names Pikachu as mascot for 2014 World Cup

If your two biggest passions in life are soccer and Pikachu, Japan is the team you should be cheering for when the 2014 FIFA World Cup gets underway in Brazil.

The most popular Pokémon — note: I have no statistics to verify this and am just going off which character caused the most arguments during elementary school — was recently named Japan’s official mascot for the upcoming World Cup.

Check it out:

It looks like Pikachu has packed on a few pounds, no? That’s okay. I have no interest in body-shaming one of my childhood heroes.

Oh, and he won’t be alone in accompanying the Japanese soccer team to Brazil. According to Bulbanews, Pikachu will be joined by Meowth, Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Chespin, Fennekin, Froakie, Pancham, Helioptile, and Litleo.

Hey, Denver Broncos linebacker Nate Irving: I think you’re playing the wrong kind of football, my friend.
