There has been speculation for months, even before American Horror Story: Coven aired its finale, as to what the premise of the fourth season of the show would be. The largest, and most widely spread, rumor was that the show would be taking a creepier than usual twist by taking place in a circus atmosphere. It turns out that this was not very far off.
There has been no official announcement as of yet;however, writer and co-executive producer Douglas Petrie participated in the Nerdist Writers Panel Podcast where he discussed the previous seasons of American Horror Story like Asylum and Coven.
When asked directly about the premise of the new season, which he says is already being worked on, at first he says that he can say nothing about it, but when they press him a little further and mention the word carnival he responded,
“Yes. It does not have a title, but that’s the idea. Very roughly, that’s the idea.”

Again, there has been no official word from the network or from show creator Ryan Murphy himself, but this is definitely a sign of things to come.
It’s set in 1950,” Murphy tells EW. “If you look historically what happened in the year 1950, there’s some more clues in that year. It’s a period piece. We try and do the opposite of what we’ve done before. Jessica Lange has already started practicing her German accent so I’m very excited!”
Now, I know that this is not exactly a carnival, but I have an interesting theory that I have talked about once before that could possibly be the setting for the show.
In 1950 in Munich, Germany the Circus Krone Building, home to one of the largest circuses in Europe was rebuilt after being destroyed by bombing attacks in World War II. At that time, the Circus Krone was being directed by Frieda Sembach-Krone, the daughter of Carl Krone who originally founded the circus in 1905.
Is it possibly that Jessica Lange could be gearing up to play the role of Frieda Sembach-Krone? At this point that is purely speculation, but at least we now know that the rumors held some truth to them, and a slight insight into where the show will be heading when the new season kicks off sometime in October.
