While Maty Mauk is the starter for now, Missouri Tigers head coach Gary Pinkel didn’t rule out the possibility of a quarterback competition when asked about it last week.
Per the Columbia Daily Tribune:
“It’s all about competition. He played a third of a season and did very, very well. We all know that. It’s still about competition. He’s the starter right now.”
Pinkel also said the slew of quarterbacks behind Mauk — Corbin Berkstresser, Eddie Printz, Trent Hosick, and freshman Marvin Zanders — should push the redshirt sophomore to elevate his game:
“The guys that are behind Maty. They just give him an extra push to practice even harder to prove that he should be in that No. 1 spot.”
Mauk went 3-1 while filling in for the injured James Franklin last season, completing 68 of 133 passes for 1,071 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also rushed for 229 yards and a touchdown.
