Dr. James Andrews is a busy man today. He’s seeing three pitchers about throwing arm problems. Later this week, he’ll see a catcher about a knee problem.
Adam Berry of MLB.com reports that Pirates’ catcher Chris Stewart will visit the renowned orthopedist later on this week. The club has announced that surgery is “probable.”
Last year, Stewart had his first full season in his 7 years experience. For the Yankees, the 32-year old saw 108 games as catcher, slashing only .211/.293/.272. He was traded in December to the Pirates for a minor leaguer. Stewart would have been the backup to Russell Martin this year. Buster Olney of ESPN suggests that the Pirates could go after Miguel Olivo, who just requested his release from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
