After much speculation since the firing of Tony Barbee after the SEC Tournament, the Auburn Tigers met with Brice Pearl on Monday night about their vacant position, and apparently everything in that meeting went well as Pearl has been hired as the next head coach of the Men’s Basketball program, according to a report from CBS.
Auburn has hired Bruce Pearl to be its new men’s basketball coach, a source told CBSSports.com on Tuesday.
The school subsequently announced the hiring.
Pearl takes over for former head coach Tony Barbee, who was fired by AD Jay Jacobs immediately after the poor SEC Tournament performance and a blowout loss to South Carolina.
Pearl, who will be making his return to the game since his run at Tennessee came to an abrupt end, is excited to get back in the coach’s box.
“I’m humbled and blessed to be back in the game that I love,” Pearl said. “I don’t know how long it will take, but it’s time to rebuild the Auburn basketball program, and bring it to a level of excellence so many of the other teams on campus enjoy.”
Pearl is still serving a three-year show-cause which expires this August, stemming from the allegations while he was at Tennessee.
Still, show-cause not withstanding, AD Jacobs has made another blockbuster hire.
