The Auburn Tigers and athletic director Jay Jacobs took another step in the direction of hiring Bruce Pearl to head up the basketball program as ESPN is reporting that the two sides met on Monday night, and that Pearl might be close to taking over the basketball day-to-day on the Plains.
Bruce Pearl met with Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs on Monday night in Knoxville, Tenn., and is strongly considering taking the job as coach, sources told ESPN.
After their unceremonious, early exit from the SEC Tournament last week, Jacobs fired then head coach Tony Barbee immediately after his post game press conference in the team hotel. Not long after that, Pearl’s name instantly popped up as a candidate for the job, and it has been coming closer and closer to a reality ever since.
This would be the second blockbuster hire for Jacobs with one of his athletic programs in the last two years. Prior to the 2013 college football season, he hired Gus Malzahn to replace Gene Chizik, and the Tigers were instantly turned around, making an appearance in the BCS National Championship Game.
Can Pearl complete the same turnaround?
