Odds on perfect bracket vs. Chicago Cubs winning World Series

Ok, so it’s become ritual this time of year to say one of two things about the Chicago Cubs during spring training – this could be the year, or wait ’till next year.

But lighten your heavy hearts, o’ followers of the loveable losers, for the odds on your Cubbies bringing home a World Series trophy aren’t the longest in sports.

Yes, the Cubs are a most definite longshot at winning it all, with the current odds (according to vegasinsider.com and other futures sites) being in the neighborhood of 125-1 for that feat. But if you want really long odds, look no further than to all the huddled and unwashed masses straining their eyes over their laptops and tablets trying to take home $1 billion for a perfect NCAA Tournament bracket.

The odds on that perfect bracket happening?

How about 1 in 9,223,372,036,854,775,808

We’ll just give you a minute to figure out exactly which ‘illion that amounts to.

I think Forrest Gump would have characterized that as a “Go-zillion” number.

But that’s the thinking anyway, of a math professor who says that it will take approximately 5000 years before we see a perfect bracket.

Your money seems to be safe, Quicken…and the trophy is yours for the taking, Cubs!
