Virginia Tech athletics employee target of embezzlement probe

A Virginia Tech athletic department employee is under investigation for a possible embezzlement case.

From the Richmond Time Dispatch:

Director of broadcasting and media Kevin Hicks became the subject of an investigation into his private business and its embezzlement of money between February, 2010 and last month after an internal audit by the school revealed “suspicious activity involving (Hicks).”

The police executed warrants and seized about 40 items. How much money was embezzled is still unknown but circuit court handles cases over $25,000 so there is the low starting point. The affidavit for seach warrants says an internal investigation uncovered Hicks’ activities including running a private and charging for various services of Virginia Tech sporting events.

In the meant time, Hicks is on paid administrative lead according to Tech associate vice president of university relations Larry Hincker.

“The police department, of course, is continuing its investigation and the university has an ongoing administrative review with respect to his employment,” Hincker said Wednesday. “Kevin is currently still employed but he is on paid administrative leave.”
