It seems as if all the action so far in the 2014 NCAA Tournament is in Buffalo on opening Thursday as a few hours after the Ohio State Buckeyes were shown an early exit by the Dayton Flyers, the St. Joseph’s Hawks gave the UConn Huskies quite the scare. But, unlike Ohio State, UConn was able to hold off the upset bid, pulling out the 89-81 win in overtime.
UConn knew exactly what it would take to win this game, as they went on a run down the stretch in which they nailed 15 of their free throw attempts in a row to hold off the let down.
Shabazz Napier played like the AAC Player of the Year in this one as he finished the night with 24 points, eight rebounds and six assists. He also went a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe, showing that he knows what he needs to do to lead this team to a title eventually.
DeAndre Daniels also showed up in a big way for the winners in this one, finishing with 18 points and four rebounds.
Now, the Huskies will go on this Saturday to play the winner of the Villanova match up with Milwaukee which will be played later this evening.
