Twentieth Century Fox is definitely making some serious moves today. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio as already set dates to both The Fantastic Four 2 and the follow up to the 2013 film The Wolverine.
This is an extremely confident move on the part of the studio. The reboot of The Fantastic Four, which is being directed by Josh Trank, doesn’t even hit theaters until June 19, 2015, and yet they have made moves to secure the date for its follow up.
However, it does help things a little that Fox has gathered a fairly decent cast to take up the roles of the superhero family. They have brought on American Horror Story and House of Cards actress Kate Mara to suit up as Sue Storm, a.k.a. The Invisible Woman. Fruitvale Station’s Michael B. Jordan has been cast as Johnny Storm, a.k.a. The Human Torch. Divergent’s Miles Teller will be suiting up as Reed Richards, or as he is sometimes know, Mr. Fantastic. Last, but certainly not least, TURN’s Jamie Bell has been cast as Ben Grimm, or The Thing.
The follow up to The Wolverine has been talked about for some time; however, there still remains that speculation on whether or not Hugh Jackman will be returning to the franchise. As of December, Jackman had no further commitments to the X-Men franchise beyond X-Men: Days of Future Past. This is not to say that this can’t change in the blink of an eye, but nothing is assured in the entertainment industry until it is on paper.
The Hollywood Reporter also spoke of a release date for an untitled Marvel film scheduled for July 13, 2018. At this point it is unknown what film will be taking this slot; however there has been speculation dating all the way back to August of last year that a crossover between the X-Men and Fantastic Four universes could be in the works.
It will be interesting to see if this “mystery” date is indeed said crossover. I guess we will have to wait and see.
The Fantastic Four 2 is currently scheduled for July 14, 2017, and the currently untitled Wolverine movie will release on March 3, 2017.
Before that, X-Men: Days of Future Past will release on May 23, 2014, and The Fantastic Four is scheduled to be released on June 19, 2015.
