MLB Rumors: Cincinnati Reds unlikely to name closer after Aroldis Chapman injury?

Many expected Cincinnati Reds manager Bryan Price to name a closer in the days after the Aroldis Chapman injury, but it doesn’t appear Price is comfortable doing so.

Price, when pressed by reporters, refused to name a successor to Chapman while he deals with injury and hinted that a variety of players could take on the role of closer while Chapman is sidelined.

#Reds Bryan Price said he’s unlikely to name a closer, that any of the bullpen guys, Hoover, LeCure, Ondrusek, Parra could be called on

Of course, we’ve seen this situation plenty of times with other managers throughout baseball who refuse to officially name a guy until they achieve success in the closer role.

Champman of course was struck by a line drive earlier this week and is expected to miss (at minimum) 6-8 weeks with a facial fracture.

It’s possible the Reds may run with a closer by committee during Chapman’s absence, though, one would figure they’d eventually settle on a particular arm.
