The Cleveland Indians might ultimately decide that they don’t want a multi-year deal with Justin Masterson. But it certainly won’t be for lack of opportunity to get a deal done.
First Masterson offered a reasonable three-year extension to the Indians. Yes you read that right; he offered the deal to them. Earlier today the organization apparently turned him down and “closed the door” on future talks.
Even with that being the case, the Indians will have another opportunity to lock up their ace beyond 2014…if they want it, that is.
Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer passes on the following tidbit.
Masterson on negotiations: “Although the doors are technically closed, they all have doorknobs so you can open them again.” #Indians.

You could argue that the Indians, who are not exactly stocked with options in the rotation, missed a second chance when they chose not to take Masterson’s offer. If they don’t take this third chance, well, they’ll have nowhere to look but inward when they don’t have good options at the top of their rotation in 2015.
