Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban always seems to find himself at the center of the college football universe, whether it’s about rule changes to slow down hurry-up offenses, tweak the NFL combine or his decision to hire the polarizing Lane Kiffin.
But the latter is the one that is finding support from one of the more unlikely places as Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer applauds Saban’s decision to hire the former USC Trojans head coach in a Q&A with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
“I think it’s great. I have a lot of respect for Coach Saban. There has been a lot of publicity about Lane Kiffin and I having issues. There’s none. We’ve talked many times since. He’s obviously a good football coach, and I wish him well. I think it was a great hire for Alabama.”
Former USC and Tennessee players have already voiced their support of Kiffin and think he’ll do well in Tuscaloosa and now one of the more accomplished coaches in college football has given his stamp of approval.
Not that Alabama fans needed any approval from Meyer or any other coaches for that matter, but Meyer knows coaching, he’s probably the second best coach in college behind Saban, so with spring practice ongoing and Alabama facing questions at quarterback, it’ll be fascinating to see what Kiffin does in his first season.
