The top-seeded Florida Gators are officially the first team to punch their ticket to the Sweet 16 as they easily handled the ninth-seeded Pittsburgh Panthers in the opening game of the Third Round on Saturday, 61-45.
From start to finish in this one, Billy Donovan’s Gators controlled the game on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor, and they got a huge boost from the SEC Player of the Year as well.
Scottie Wilbekin finished the game with 21 points and three rebounds in leading his team to the victory and one step closer to the national title. He hit a huge three-point shot right before the buzzer sounded for halftime, setting the tone for how dominant the Gators were going to be in this one.
Pitt just couldn’t get anything going today, not near as much as they could on Thursday against Colorado. The stifling Florida defense rendered them useless and are moving on because of that.
Now, the Gators will get some much-needed rest as they await the winner of Stephen F. Austin and UCLA who will square off on Sunday.
