In what Virginia Cavaliers head coach Tony Bennett called a game of two halves, the No. 1 seeded Cavaliers came from behind to beat the No. 16 seeded Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 70-59 on Friday night.
Virginia erased a five-point Chanticleers lead in the second half after Bennett called his team out in the locker room at halftime.
“I said, you guys have been so unified, what Anthony referred to, all year. That’s a strength of yours. You’re an unselfish team. When you’ve played your best ball, your unified. Now you’re going to start fracturing? I said you have to come together in a way that you haven’t all year, because of what’s at stake.
“I said they’re capable of beating you. I said, stop being afraid. If you lose, you lose. I said play. I said, play as hard as you can defensively. You’ve got to lay everything you’ve got defensively and let it come offensively. I said take the shots that are there, stop trying to do it by yourself offensively. But you’re going to win it with your defense. I repeated that a few times and kept talking about those things.”
Virginia will now face N0. 8 seed Memphis Tigers in the third round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday.
