They may not have been the best team in the Pac-12 Conference this college basketball season, but the Stanford Cardinal are now at least one of the best 16 teams left in the nation as they upset the second-seeded Kansas Jayhawks in South Region action on Sunday 60-57.
From start to finish, the theme of the day for the 10th-seeded Cardinal was physicality. Throughout the game, Kansas seemed just out-manned down low and Stanford knew what they had to do on the low block coming in.
Right before the half, it looked as if Kansas was ready to take over, as they got a big three-point shot from Conner Frankamp to give them a 24-22 lead at the break.
However, in the second half, the Cardinal kept it going down low with the superior defensive rebounding which ultimately is what did the Jayhawks in,
Stanford was led in this one by Dwight Powell, who showed up in a big way once again. On the afternoon, Powell finished with 15 points and six rebounds.
The Cardinal are now off to Memphis to face the Cinderella Dayton Flyers.
