Cesar Izturis opts out of Astros contract

Houston Astros camp is thinning out.

Brian McTaggart of MLB.com says that Cesar Izturis has been informed that he will not be on the Major League team on Opening Day and will opt out of his contract. Izturis will now hit free agency.

The 34-year old Izturis was trying to make it on the Astros as a utility infielder. Last season with Cincinnati, the 13-year veteran played in only 63 games at shortstop, second and third base. He hit .209/.259/.271. Izturis is a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger award winner.
