Chicago and New York Play to 1-1 Draw

The slow start for Mike Petke’s New York Red Bulls continues, as they play Chicago to a 1-1 draw.

Jeff Larentowicz gave the Fire a quick 1-0 lead early into the game. He scored from a header off of a corner in the 6th minute. New York would manage to tie the match just 15 minutes later from a Dax McCarty goal. Most of the second half action took place in the Chicago final third; with New York pressing for a game winner. Their efforts were ultimately futile, and the defending Supporters Shield winners settled for a draw.

This was the home opener for the Fire who are now 0-1-2; as are the Red Bulls. 2013 MLS MVP Mike Magee made his season debut, and played the full 90 minutes. Magee had been sidelined for the first two games of the season with a hamstring injury. Toyota Park was filled with almost 17,000 people for the club’s 17th season opener. Chicago will face DC United next Saturday on NBCSN, and NYRB will face Chivas next Sunday.

Chicago lineup: (4-4-2) Johnson; Watson; Hurtado; Soumare; Cochrane; Shipp; Larentowicz; De Lima; Joya; Magee; Amarikwa

NYRB lineup: (4-4-2) Robles; Eckersley; Olave; Sekagya; Miller; Sam; Alexander; McCarty; Steele; Cahill; Henry

Man of the Match: Jeff Larentowicz. He opened the scoring for the Fire and now has two goals on the season. Without his goal, Chicago drop points.
