NCAA Basketball Rumors: Shaka Smart 'likely' to take over Marquette

When Buzz Williams left the Marquette Golden Eagles a few days ago to move on to the ACC and the Virginia Tech Hokies, it created one of the most intriguing openings in the college basketball coaching world, and that void might be filled by one of the most successful candidates the school could have asked for, VCU’s Shaka Smart.

Should this happen, this would be a tremendous hire by the school after having to deal with the shock of Williams taking off to Blacksburg.

In recent years, Smart has built the small school of Virginia Commonwealth into one of the powers in college basketball, even making a Final Four appearance back in the 2011 season. This year, they were bounced in the Second Round by the Cinderella Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks.

But still, the fact that we’re saying VCU was upset in the NCAA Tournament speaks volumes to what Smart has done with this program, and is foreshadowing to the great things that he could do at a program like Marquette.
