NCAA Basketball Rumors: Shaka Smart 'likely' to take over Marquette

When Buzz Williams left the Marquette Golden Eagles a few days ago to move on to the ACC and the Virginia Tech Hokies, it created one of the most intriguing openings in the college basketball coaching world, and that void might be filled by one of the most successful candidates the school could have asked for, VCU’s Shaka Smart.

Should this happen, this would be a tremendous hire by the school after having to deal with the shock of Williams taking off to Blacksburg.

In recent years, Smart has built the small school of Virginia Commonwealth into one of the powers in college basketball, even making a Final Four appearance back in the 2011 season. This year, they were bounced in the Second Round by the Cinderella Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks.

But still, the fact that we’re saying VCU was upset in the NCAA Tournament speaks volumes to what Smart has done with this program, and is foreshadowing to the great things that he could do at a program like Marquette.

Great hire for Marquette and the Big East. Maybe Buzz was shown the door because Marquette knew they were getting Shaka?

VCU is not a small school. It has one of the largest student bodies in VA. Shaka Smart DID bring national attention to the school, however.

Small school? VCU has about three times as many students as Marquette.

Brenda – did you fall on your head earlier today?

VCU is not a “small” school by any means. It has over 30,000 students at the graduate and undergrauate levels and a premier medical school.

Shaka is said to be tired of living in the capital of the confederacy and interested in returning to the 21st century (which rules out Winston Salem). Doc Rivers pushing Marquette’s tradition and role in supporting black players.

This would be a slam dunk even if Shaka wasn’t from Wisconsin and wasn’t the #2 BB program.
