The Oakland Athletics are known as a platoon ball club, playing lefties against right handed pitchers and vice versa.

Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle says that first base will be platooned this year by Alberto Callaspo and Brandon Moss. Manager Bob Melvin confirmed this in a media report this morning. Moss, a left-handed batter, will play against righties and Callaspo will play at first against lefties.

Over the course of his eight-year career, Alberto Callaspo has played exactly zero games at first base. He has made the majority of his starts at the hot corner at third base and has played well enough in Spring Training to warrant the move. On days that Callaspo does not play at first, he will go back to the position that the Athletics acquired him to play – second base.
