College Football Playoff: Dr. Pepper to be title sponsor of new trophy

In 2014, the college football national champion at the FBS level will be decided for the first time ever by a playoff scenario, pitting the four best teams against one another that will be selected by a committee that will watch the games throughout the year. With this, it was also announced that the traditional crystal ball will be replaced by a new, flashy trophy, and in a statement on Tuesday, executive director Bill Hancock announced that Dr. Pepper will be the sponsor of the hardware.

“Dr Pepper has many longstanding relationships in college, including ours,” said CFP executive director Bill Hancock in a statement. “Dr Pepper’s people are top-notch and their commitment to this great game is unique and exciting. We are grateful that ESPN has secured this partnership and we are thrilled about the future of the new playoff.”

Of course, ESPN is involved in the process, as it is all things related to the college football world.

The trophy will be presented to the winner of the first every championship game on Jan. 12 in Arlington, TX.
