Confirming every stereotype possible, Portland now officially owns the tree-hugging world record.
Last July, 936 Oregonians gathered in Portland’s Washington Park, each hugging a tree for one minute. The stunt clearly shattered the previous record of 720 tree-huggers, but Portland’s accomplishment — feel free to call it an “accomplishment” if you so wish — was not officially recognized by the folks at Guinness World Records until this week.
The record may not stand for long, however. There’s already a plan to set a new world record this summer, with July 12 being the selected date. So if you love trees, live in Portland, and want to be immortalized, swing by Washington Park this summer and be part of history.
