When the Detroit Pistons fired head coach Mo Cheeks in the middle of the NBA season, of course one of the first names that was brought up was that of Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo–as it generally is. Some have been clamoring to see Izzo make the jump to the professional ranks for years, as he’s believed to be one of the few college coaches that can work at the next level; And according to USA TODAY, the Pistons making a run at Izzo will be a possibility this offseason.
Currently, Izzo and his Michigan State team are currently alive in the NCAA Tournament as he has led his team to the Sweet 16 once again.
The last time that Izzo was heavily pursued was by the Cleveland Cavaliers and Dan Gilbert, who is a Michigan State alum. Pistons owner Tom Gores is also from the school, but as we saw with the Cavaliers’ pursuit of Izzo, that doesn’t mean too much.
Is this a long shot? Yes. However, if Michigan State and Izzo were to win the national title, you would have to wonder whether or not he would ask himself, “What more is there for me to do here?”
