Although Cam Newton will be laid up for possibly four months after undergoing ankle surgery last week, the quarterback will be with the Carolina Panthers at least through the 2015 season as general manager Dave Gettleman intends to use the 2015 team option on the former Auburn product.

That’s not exactly breaking news by any stretch, but it puts any extension talks on hold – for now.

"Gettleman on using 5th year club option on QB Cam Newton: “The short answer is yes.” Fully intends for Cam to be a Panther for a long time."

There was some talk earlier this offseason suggesting that Newton and the Panthers could possibly iron out a long term deal, but that appears to have been put on the back burner as Newton recovers from his ankle operation.

The two sides can still negotiate a new contract and it’s presumed they will do so, it’s just a matter of when those talks begin. For now, Newton will be a Panther through the 2015 season.
