Rays in search of starting pitching depth

With a recent suspension issued to prospect pitcher Alex Colome, Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon says that the team would like to add another bit of starting pitching depth.

After the news of the release of Erik Bedard, Marc Topkins of the Tampa Bay Times reports that the veteran lefty will look for a major league job, but could return to Tampa if one doesn’t present itself. Any pitcher that the Rays add at this point would presumably be on minor league deals.

Notable free agent starters that were given their releases yesterday include Freddy Garcia and Scott Baker. Aaron Harang was also on that list, but shortly after his release from the Indians, he signed with the Braves.

Colome was expected to be the first one to step up if someone in Tampa’s rotation went down for any reason.
