The Philadelphia Phillies need a lot of things to break right for their 2014 season not to crumble before their very eyes.
It is highly unlikely that Ryan Howard will live up or even get close to living up to his lofty contract. Many have dubbed him nothing more than a platoon player at this point as he tries to prove he can stay healthy for a full season.
In 81 at-bats against left-handed pitching last season, Howard batted .173/.218/.321. His career marks against LHP aren’t much better: .224/.300/.428. If he somehow could improve those numbers it would check off one of the many things that need to go right for the Phillies.
That might not be likely (Howard is 34 years old, after all) but the Phillies sure had to be happy to see this left-against-left shot from Howard on Tuesday night.
