Spring training has not been kind to players across the major league as the injury bug has hit teams in a major way.

One of those players on the shelf is San Francisco Giants’ second baseman Marco Scutaro.

The veteran  has been sidelined for most of the spring with back problems and said that he will begin the season on the disabled list, which shouldn’t come as much as a surprise.

Scutaro was plagued by back stiffness for most of the 2013 season. He had a couple of epidural injections earlier this spring and recently had a cortisone injection.

The Giants didn’t make it official, but before their game against Colorado on Wednesday the 38-year-old Scutaro said that he is likely to remain in Arizona for more treatment when the team breaks camp.

Scutaro’s injury means that Joaquin Arias is the likely starting second baseman when the Giants open up the 2014 season Monday at Arizona.

However the Giants are very thin in terms of infield depth as Arias had to start at third base on Wednesday, with Pablo Sandoval nursing a small cut in his hand.

The veteran Scutaro posted a .297/.357/.369 slash line last season in 127 games, but has managed only two plate appearances all spring.
