MLB Rumors: Mariners looking to add another starting pitcher
By Matt Shetler
As spring training winds down, several teams will be looking to make a few moves to put the finishing touches on the team that will take the field to open the 2014 season.
The Seattle Mariners are no exception.
The Mariners are looking for another starting pitcher after the departure of Randy Wolf, Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News-Tribune writes.
Wolf was supposed to be part of the Mariners’ rotation, but he left the team over a disagreement about a 45-day advance-consent release. Add in the fact that Seattle has also released Scott Baker, who was another candidate for the rotation and you can see the need.
Baker has since signed with the Rangers.
For the time being Seattle is now stuck with either Blake Beavan or Hector Noesi to fill the No. 5 spot in their rotation.
"“There are still some things in the works,” manager Lloyd McClendon told Dutton this morning. “We’re starting to get clarity to the whole picture. Hopefully, by the end of the day, we’ll have more to tell you.”"
The needs for a fourth and fifth starter should be short term problem for Seattle. The Mariners expect Hisashi Iwakuma, Taijuan Walker and Brandon Maurer to return from injuries at some point in April.
