Steve Young is a multiple Super Bowl winning Hall of Fame quarterback who carved out his legacy as one of the greatest quarterbacks to have ever played the game. Johnny Manziel is a NFL prospect with no championships to his name who is as famous for his off the field antics as he is for his play.
To Jon Gruden, they’re the same person — apparently.
Gruden, like everyone else in the football world, is studying up on tape of Manziel to figure out just what the heck he is. Is he a running back, a quarterback, a future legend, a solid backup or a total bust?
According to Gruden, he’s Steve Young.
Jon Gruden: “Steve Young is who I see when I watch Johnny Manziel’s tape. Lot of common ground: size, speed, playmaking ability and upside.”

Gruden was part of Steve Young’s rise to fame in San Francisco in the early 90s, so he knows a thing or two about the guy. It’s hard to take Gruden’s comparison seriously, but it’s not without merit.
Only time will tell what Manziel becomes, but so far it seems everyone loves him one minute, hates him the next and then he’s Steve Young.
