In the main event of Bellator 114, Alexander Shlemenko will look to defend his Bellator Middleweight championship against season 9 tournament winner, Brennan Ward.
Shlemenko (49-7) won the Bellator Middleweight championship by defeating Maiquel Falcao by knockout back at Bellator 88 in February of last year. Since then, Shlemenko has defended his title two times against Brett Cooper and Doug Marshall respectively. Tonight he will look for his 50th professional victory over Brennan Ward.
Ward (9-1) was not even supposed to be in the Bellator season 9 Middleweight tournament. Ward cashed in on his opportunity when he replaced an injured Andreas Spang at Bellator 98. That night, Ward took on Justin Torrey in the quarterfinals and knocked him out in the second round. Ward went on to defeat Joe Pacheco and Mikkel Parlo to get his shot at Bellator gold tonight.
Round 1: They touch gloves to start. Alex with a straight left. Ward misses a big hook and eats a body kick. Left hook lands for Ward, followed up by a right and a clinch knee. Shlemenko stuffs a takedown, but eats another left hook. Body kick from Shlemenko. Left hook from Shlemenko. Spinning back kick from Ward. They are exchanging wild shots. Shlemenko lands two solid shots, but is taken down momentarily. Ward pushes Shlemenko to the fence and lands two knees in the clinch. One of the knees is low, and referee John McCarthy stops the bout momentarily. On the restart Ward eats a left hook and roars at Shlemenko. Ward takes Shlemenko down and gets his back. Ward latches on a nasty neck crank, but Shlemenko breaks free. McCarthy stands them up. Shlemenko with a body kick and a spinning back kick. Hard hook lands for Shlemenko, but Ward takes him down again. Ward gets Shlemenko’s back again, and a body triangle. Shlemenko is defending the rear naked choke well. Ward softening him up from his back. That is how the round ends. 10-9 Ward
Round 2: Shlemenko with a body kick, but eats a big left. Hard body shot from Shlemenko. Body kick from Shlemenko. Ward is answering, but Shlemenko is landing the harder shots right now. Knee in the clinch from Shlemenko. Two body kicks from Shlemenko. Head kick is blocked by Ward. Ward with the takedown attempt, but Shlemenko latches on to a deep front head choke/modified guillotine and that is it. Quick tap from Brennan Ward, and Shlemenko retains his title.
