After the UFC lost Chris Weidman to a knee injury, the promotion needed a new main event for UFC 173 in May. Today, the UFC announced that Bantamweight champion, Renan Barao, will take on Team Alpha Male member, TJ Dillashaw.
Dillashaw, the former TUF 14 runner-up, may be a shocking choice to take on Barao as Raphael Assuncao is on six fight winning streak, including a razor close split decision over Dillashaw back in October. According to reports, Assuncao is currently dealing with nagging injuries, and was not available for UFC 173. Dillashaw has won 5 of his last six, and is coming off a dominant decision victory over Mike Easton at UFC Fight Night 35
Renan Barao recently defeated Dillashaw’s teammate, Urijah Faber, in their rematch for the Bantamweight title back at UFC 169. The win was not without controversy, however, as many believed Herb Dean stopped the bout prematurely. Regardless, Barao is the undisputed champ and will have another Team Alpha Male member to deal with in May.
As for the Middleweight championship bout between Chris Weidman and Lyoto Machida, the UFC postponed the bout until UFC 175 in July.
