World Figure Skating Championships 2014: Yuzuru Hanyu wins men's title

It seemed very unlikely that reigning 2014 Winter Olympics champion Yuzuru Hanyu would be bringing home a title at the World Figure Skating Championships on Friday after entering the men’s free skate trailing fellow Japanese skater Tatsuki Machida by seven points.

However, Hanyu took the ice at Super Saitama Arena in front of his home country and gave an incredible performance that vaulted him to the top of the standings to bring home the world title.

Machida finished in second-place, with Javier Fernandez of Spain completing the podium. Jermey Abbott was the top finisher from the United States, while Max Aaron finished in eighth-place.

Here are the top eight results from the World Championships on Friday.

1. Yuzuru HANYU JPN 282.59
2. Tatsuki MACHIDA JPN 282.26
3. Javier FERNANDEZ ESP 275.93
4. Maksim KOVTUN RUS 247.37
5. Jeremy ABBOTT USA 246.35
6. Takahiko KOZUKA JPN 238.02
7. Han YAN CHN 231.91
8. Max AARON USA 225.66

The good news for the United States men is that their combined finish of 13 earns them a coveted third spot in next year’s World Championships. It will be the first time since 2011 that the United States has had three men compete at Worlds.
